GHHI's MD Healthy Homes Awareness Month Events


June is National Healthy Housing Month, created by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) Office of Lead Hazard Control and Healthy Homes (OLHCHH).  To support awareness GHHI is providing education sessions “to increase awareness of housing-related health hazards, lead poisoning prevention, and the overall principles of a healthy home, especially for low-income populations” and to “encourage residents to take the actions and steps for safe and healthy homes.”  Join in and share these events with your staff, collagenous and clients. Let’s raise awareness together.

Nearly 6 million households live with moderate to severe housing hazards, including lead paint, water intrusion, injury and safety risks, pests, and electrical deficiencies.

These hazards increase the risk for illnesses and injuries including: asthma, falls, respiratory problems and lead poisoning. GHHI is committed to ensuring that all families live in homes that are healthy, safe, energy efficient and sustainable.

The COVID-19 crisis has forced many Americans to spend even more time than before in their homes. GHHI has met the unprecedented crisis of COVID-19 by expanding and innovating our services to mitigate the risks to the communities we serve and to continue to safely provide services to families in need. This Healthy Homes Toolkit is for other organizations to use, free of charge, to adapt in-person healthy housing services to the virtual setting.

This toolkit provides a wide variety of resources, including operational protocols, best practices, data management planning, and much more.

How safe is your home? Do you know the Lead Laws? We are hosting a virtually webinar that will provide a comprehensive overview of Maryland’s Reduction in Lead Risk in Housing Law, Title X’s Disclosure Rule, EPA’s Lead-Based Paint Renovation, Repair, and Paint, and Lead Safe Work Practices followed by a question and answer segment. We will provide an update on the Federal and State lead laws and the NEW regulations that will take effect later this year. In addition, we will provide pamphlets, educational materials, and a housing resource list for homeowners

To break the link between unhealthy housing and unhealthy families by creating and advocating for healthy, safe and energy efficient homes. (GHHI) clients together to obtain education on GHHI processes used to assist Maryland Communities on Healthy Housing to include lead poisoning preventions, advisement on lead level, Renovating safe and Asthma Triggers. Parents will have the opportunity to give input on programs to improve the delivery of services and ensure the efficient use of resources to reduce lead poisoning, asthma and injury in low income housing while improving energy efficiency.

The Green & Healthy Homes Initiative is hosting a virtual town hall in recognition of National Healthy Homes Month to highlight effective approaches to building community-based partnerships and delivering healthy housing through the organization’s place-based services. GHHI staff members from Baltimore, Providence, Memphis and Jackson (MS) will discuss their strategies for building partnerships and networks capable of addressing health disparities related to housing through community engagement, education, housing repairs, workforce development, and other programming.
