FREE Maryland Department of Health Training on Implementing a Trauma-Informed Harm Reduction Approach

The Maryland Department of Health’s (MDH) Center for Harm Reduction Services (CHRS), in partnership with Trauma Informed Inc., is accepting applications for the Implementing a Trauma-Informed Harm Reduction Approach to Improve Health, Reduce Stigma, and Reinforce the Dignity of People Who Use Drugs training series.

The application deadline is April 16, 2021; however, applications will be evaluated on a first-come, first-served basis with a review process prioritizing geographic and field diversity. To ensure a dynamic learning environment, we aim to form a group reflecting a spectrum of experiences with and perspectives on harm reduction and trauma-informed care.

This is a free, four-session virtual training series:

Wednesday, June 2, 2021 from 2pm – 4pm EST

Wednesday, June 9, 2021 from 2pm – 4pm EST

Wednesday,  June 16, 2021 from 2pm – 4pm EST

Wednesday, June 30, 2021 from 2pm – 4pm EST

Topics include:

Principles and practice of harm reduction

Experience and prevalence of trauma, including racial and historical trauma and trauma related to experiences with healthcare and other service providers

Relationship between trauma and substance use

Principles of trauma-informed care

Using the drug user health framework to improve health by addressing a range of health needs and social determinants of health

Skills development for assessing organizational approaches to trauma, identifying opportunities to implement trauma-informed approaches to drug user health, and planning for implementation

Access the Application Here. And please share this exciting opportunity with your professional networks, including health, behavioral health, and social services organizations!

In addition to the live sessions, there will be between-session engagement opportunities (including readings, worksheets, goal-setting and feedback opportunities). After completing the training series, participants will join a one-year learning collaborative that will meet quarterly through August 2022. It is important that participants can commit to attending all sessions and engaging with the between-session exercises, as well as joining the learning collaborative after completing the training series.

Maryland service providers who apply and are selected to participate in the training will be expected to attend quarterly virtual learning collaboratives through August 2022. Training attendees will be supported by CHRS throughout the year in implementing and integrating a trauma-informed, harm reduction approach.

Given the focus on implementing new trauma-informed practices, we encourage applicants to identify a co-applicant from their organization who can work with them to implementation. While this is not a requirement, we will accept up to two participants per organization.

Because of the time commitment and goal of implementing actionable strategies for addressing the health and social determinants of people who use drugs, it is important that organizational leadership support your involvement. Supervisor approval is required. If you need support to obtain supervisor approval, CHRS can offer assistance.

Please apply as soon as possible!
